About

Covid Relief was established by a coalition of organizations in the face of the devastating health and economic present and future impacts created by Covid 19. The coalition includes SATI Foundation (http://sati.or.th/), Scholars of Sustenance (https://www.scholarsofsustenance.org/), and Urban Studies Lab (https://www.facebook.com/UrbanStudiesLab), with support from Bangkok 1899 and the Thai Health Volunteers Foundation.

The Issue

The coronavirus has in the space of a few weeks completely transformed our lives, and there is a sense of foreboding that for many, the worst is yet to come. But while some people in Bangkok are able to quarantine themselves at home safely, there are many elderly and low-income households who rely on daily wages to support their families, making social distancing an impossibility. This means coronavirus spread is likely to be highest in our poorest neighborhoods, posing a considerable threat to the lives of many, but especially the elderly and those already suffering from pre-existing conditions.

In the short term, the spread must be slowed down to ease the burden on Thailand’s already overwhelmed public health infrastructure. Long term, considerable economic pain is expected here in Thailand, particularly by households that depend on industries like tourism, which will be devastated by Covid 19.

Distribution target: At- risk, low-income, unregistered migrant communities

Distribution of food supplies: rice(5kg), canned fish, (fruit-canned)

When the Covid-19 Pandemic started last year, no one was prepared for its effect on people’s health and livelihoods and the economic disruption it triggered. Consisting of like-minded NGOs, social enterprises and volunteers from across Thailand and abroad, Covid Relief Bangkok was formed to respond to these challenges.

Some of the main contributors are:

SATI : An NGO that focuses on healthcare and education for at risk and underserved youths throughout Thailand

Urban Studies Lab: A knowledge-based independent urban studies laboratory which serves as a knowledge & data management center and community engagement facilitator

Bangkok 1899: A cultural and civic hub

FREC: Ford Research and Education center

During the span of 6 months, Covid Relief Bangkok, in collaboration with Health centers all over Bangkok, donated over a million meals in addition to food and sanitation supplies to vulnerable communities throughout the capital city.

In phase 2, Covid Relief went from distribution to upskilling and mental health. We ran business boot camp for 8 communities as well as psychological first aid training for over 300 health volunteers throughout Bangkok. Covid Relief has been running psychological first aid classes up until the latest 3rd wave outbreak. Now, as more people continue to suffer the economic impact of the pandemic, it has become a necessity to restart the distribution of necessary food supplies such as rice and canned fish to the most vulnerable communities, namely, low income, unregistered and migrant communities. We will be running a safe and efficient process, limiting the risk of exposure. To do this, we need your support.

Update 9: 5 June 2021

This week we distributed to 1600 families. Low income and migrant workers. Our distribution was mainly focused on emergency cases. Communities who have Covid infected individuals and have to quarantine causing them not to be able to work or go out to buy food.

The process from the info we were able to gather from health volunteers is individuals infected who are asymptotic or have minor symptoms have to spend part of their time in field hospitals followed by home quarantine. Although these are important health measures you can imagine what an effect this has on daily wage earners. One of the call for helps that we received literally said “we have families who are starving”.

Update 8: 28 May 2021

This week we distributed to 1300 families in the Minburi area plus 20 migrant worker families. It’s not much but we hope the extra meals can help these struggling families in their time of need. We continue to collect data and info from health volunteers and community leaders. Everyone’s with the same understanding of the importance of getting vaccinated eventhough continued confusion exists on how to register. Update 7: 21 May 2021

Our Thursday drop off this week was to 3 communities in 2 different districts Dusit and Bueng Kum. 600 families 6900 meals. We have increased our weekly distribution to approximately 1000 families a week. I’d also like to take this opportunity to give much deserved thanks to Scott Chang and Ford Thailand! Since last year they have let us borrow cars for distribution and Scott himself has been to every single drop off and has done most of the heavy lifting. From experience it’s rare to find a company that does so much quietly. Thanks for the support and thanks for making us look like the coolest volunteers ever!

Update 4: 7 May 2021

500 bags of rice and 2000 cans of fish distributed to Health Center 61 in Sai Mai to support 500 low income families. We were informed by the health center that there are an increasing number of infected in the area. 3 hotels have been set up was field hospitals. This area is densely populated with daily wage workers and elderly. They expressed their concern for individuals who have to leave their homes on a daily basis to work as street vendors. Another concern is that there are many people in their care that are not able to leave their homes either due to safety or self quarantine and are not able to get food and supplies. Our supplies will mainly be distributed to these individuals. We will continue to support any way we can. Thank you for the hard work of the health workers at Center 61. Update 1: 29 April 2021

Today we did a drop off for 3 low income communities 400 families in Chong Nonsi. The vibe was much different from last year. Everyone was much more weary on both sides. Our drop off was in 3 open areas spots where the communities could safely disperse supplies. Driving through the communities there’s a similar theme. Under bridges, behind factories, abandon buildings, and tight spaces. It was difficult not to talk to the the people in the communities in person and to ask if they are ok. I can’t help but feel that more needs to be done but I’m not sure what right now. We will continue to do what little we can and more if possible.
